There were 1,113 school-transportation-related accidents from 2008 to 2017, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Slightly more than half (52%) happened in the country’s rural areas. Many of those accidents caused fatalities.

A 16-year-old passenger told the TV station he was in the back of the bus when the accident happened. He struck his head on the floor, blacked out, and woke up near the front of the bus
- In August, Letcher County child was injured after a school bus carrying 22 kids ran off a road and overturned, according to Lexington Herald-Leader. State police found it in a ditch off the right shoulder. The child was taken from the scene to a hospital
- This summer a trial of a case involving a girl injured by a school bus driver started. The accident happened in 2015, and with a lawsuit filed by her mother filed three years later. Six-year-old Ally Rednour got off the bus, but her backpack was stuck in the door. The driver, Melinda Sanders, failed to check if she was clear of the bus and drove about 1,000 feet before stopping. Rednour suffered severe abrasions to 12 percent of her body and has had several surgeries, reports the Daily Mail
